What a floor plan actually is (and why the ceiling is missing)

A floor plan isn't a drawing of a house from above. It's a slice through one. Once you know where the cut happens, every symbol on the page starts making sense.

Here's a question almost nobody asks, even though the answer explains everything.

You've seen a floor plan before. Thin lines, thick lines, little arcs where the doors go, a shape that's supposed to be a toilet but isn't. Everyone looks at one and thinks the same thing: this is a picture of a house from above.

It isn't. Not even close.

A floor plan is a house that somebody sliced in half.


The concept: somebody cut the building open

Imagine your house is made of clay. Now imagine taking a wire and slicing straight through it, sideways, about four feet off the floor — roughly chest height on a grown-up, over the top of your head if you're sitting down.

Lift the top half off. Set it aside. Now stand above what's left and look straight down.

That's a floor plan. Not a view from the sky. A view into a building with its lid taken off.

Architects call that invisible slice the cut plane, and once you know it's there, every strange thing on a floor plan turns out to be logical:

Why walls are two lines instead of one. You're not looking at a wall. You're looking at the cut edge of a wall — the raw end, the way a slice of bread shows you how thick the loaf is. The gap between those two lines is real thickness you could measure with a tape.

Why the ceiling isn't there. It was above the cut. So was the roof, the attic, the light fixtures, and the second floor. All of it went with the top half.

Why doors have that little quarter-circle. The door itself got sliced, so you see it edge-on as a straight line. The arc is the path it sweeps through the air when it opens — drawn in so you can tell, without being there, whether the door is about to whack into something. It usually is. That's most of what an architect does all day.

Why furniture looks so weird. Furniture is mostly below four feet — a bed, a sofa, a toilet. It didn't get cut, so you're seeing the top of it, looking down. A bed from directly overhead is a rectangle with a pillow. A toilet from directly overhead is an oval stuck to a box.

Someone told me once, at age five: "Toilets do not look like that." She was completely right. They don't. But from straight up, with the top of the building removed, that's genuinely what's left. That comment is the reason this app exists — and it's the reason this is the first lesson.

Why windows sit inside the wall lines. Window glass usually starts around three feet up, so the four-foot cut passes right through it. You're seeing sliced glass, drawn as thin lines bridging the gap in the wall.

That's the whole idea. One imaginary cut, and a floor plan stops being a code you have to memorize and starts being something you can just read.


Do it in the app

Open Tiny Architects Designer. Nothing to download, nothing to sign into. You get a blank page, which is the correct place to start.

1. Draw one room. In the Walls palette, under Outside, pick Room Outline. Drag a rectangle. That's four exterior walls at once, already joined at the corners.

Look closely at what you drew: two lines, not one. There's the cut plane doing its job. In this app exterior walls are 6 inches thick — real thickness, the sort a real house has, because there's insulation and structure inside a real outside wall.

2. Put a wall inside it. Under Inside, pick Interior Wall and draw a line across your rectangle to split it into two rooms.

Now compare the lines. The inside wall is thinner — 4 inches. Not decoration: an interior wall is just dividing space, so it doesn't need to be as fat. Architects have used line thickness to say "outside wall" versus "inside wall" for hundreds of years, and you can now read that off any plan in the world. No key, no legend. The line tells you what the wall is.

3. Cut a hole in a wall. From Doors, pick Single Door and click on a wall. Watch the wall break open and the arc appear.

Swing it around. Point it into the small room, then the big one. Notice how in one direction it's fine, and in the other it's suddenly in the way. You just did real architecture. That decision gets made hundreds of times in every building you have ever walked through, and you only ever notice when somebody got it wrong.

4. Now put the top half back. Top of the screen, switch from Plan to 3D.

There it is — the half of the building that got sliced away. Walls with actual height (8 feet, standard for a room), the door you placed as a real hole you could walk through, the window as a real opening with light coming through it.

Flip back to Plan. Then to 3D again. Back and forth a couple of times.

That flip is the entire lesson. Same building, twice: once with the top on, once with the top off. Every architect in the world holds both of those pictures in their head at once, and switching between them is exactly how you learn to.


Your turn

Draw the room you are sitting in right now.

Don't measure anything. Don't look anything up. Just look around and get the shape roughly right:

  1. Four walls — Room Outline, in the proportion the room looks. Long and skinny? Draw it long and skinny.
  2. Every door — and get the swing right. Actually check which way your real door opens. Most people have no idea until they look.
  3. Every window, roughly where they really are.
  4. Flip to 3D and walk your eyes around it.

Then the good part: what's wrong? Something always is. The door is on the wrong side, or the room is way too square, or there's a window you completely forgot existed even though you've sat next to it for years.

Fix it and flip again. That loop — draw, look, notice, fix — is the job. That's not a simplified kid version of what architects do. It's the thing itself.
